In the name of the Father
To start off the programme, we begin by exploring the concept of names and how important they are in the Bible and in everyday life. First we look at our own names, understanding the importance of it and the fact that we have been chosen by God. We explore the importance of Baptism as well as its significance. The children are reminded of the story of Jesus’ baptism as well as what would have happened at their baptism. Part of this lesson will be in the church, where we remind the children about the significance of blessing ourselves as we enter the church-it is a reminder of our baptism. We also practise this so the children are confident in how and why we enter the church in a certain way. They will also be introduced to the baptismal font and to the idea of the Old and New Testaments.
Questions you might like to ask your child:
Q. What do we do as we enter the church?
A. Bless ourselves with Holy water, make the sign of the Cross and genuflect.
Q. Why do we do this?
A. It is a prayer, it shows our belief in the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit, it is a sign of respect.
Q. Why are our names important? Are our names important to God?
God has a relationship with each and every one of us. This relationship helps us to see that God loves us and that we are very important to him.
Q. Where do we become a part of God’s family? And where in the church do we find it?
The aim here is to recall their Baptism and its significance. Pointing out to the Font helps them remember that they were chosen by God to be his children. The Eucharist/Mass, which they are preparing for, is now the next stage where they will encounter their loving Father.
